Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has firmly distanced himself from recent calls advocating for the arming of Nigerian citizens. In a clear and unequivocal statement, Sowore reaffirmed his commitment to non-violent democratic advocacy and urged national focus on more pressing issues affecting millions of Nigerians — including food security, employment, and access to quality education.

Amid growing concerns over insecurity and economic instability, voices have emerged suggesting that arming citizens could be a solution. However, Sowore cautioned against such rhetoric, warning that introducing more weapons into the hands of civilians would only exacerbate Nigeria’s fragile security situation.

“I want to make it abundantly clear that I do not support the idea of arming the Nigerian populace as a solution to our challenges,” Sowore stated. “Our priority must be to fight poverty, not to escalate violence. We need to focus on what truly empowers the people — ensuring every Nigerian can afford a decent meal, has a job to sustain their family, and access to education that opens doors for a better future.”

Sowore emphasized that the root causes of unrest and insecurity in Nigeria are deeply linked to systemic failure in governance, widespread poverty, and lack of opportunity — not the absence of firepower. He called on fellow activists, policymakers, and citizens to channel their energies into peaceful and transformative solutions that address these core issues.
