The Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) has expressed strong disapproval of the National Broadcasting Commission's (NBC) recent decision to ban Eedris Abdulkareem's protest song, "Tell Your Papa," from radio and television platforms. The song, which critiques the socio-economic challenges facing Nigerians and calls for accountability, has sparked widespread discussions across the nation.
PMAN President, Pretty Okafor, described the ban as a misguided move that could inadvertently amplify the song's popularity. "Banning the song was a major mistake. It has only drawn more attention to the message it carries, which resonates deeply with the struggles of ordinary Nigerians," Okafor stated. He emphasized that the song reflects the realities of the nation's economic hardships and security challenges, and should not be silenced.
The NBC, in a memo dated April 9, 2025, cited Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code as the basis for the ban, labeling the song "objectionable" and "inappropriate for public decency." Despite this, "Tell Your Papa" has gained significant traction on social media, with many Nigerians rallying behind its message.
