The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced its decision to seek judicial redress over what it describes as the unconstitutional and unethical defections of former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and incumbent Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a strongly worded statement issued by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, the party condemned the defections as a betrayal of the trust reposed in both leaders by the electorate who voted them into office under the PDP banner.
“These actions are not just politically opportunistic but a violation of the democratic mandate entrusted to them by the people of Delta State,” the statement read. “Our constitution and electoral system are not designed to permit such ideological summersaults without consequence.”
The PDP maintained that it has compiled all necessary documentation and is proceeding to the Federal High Court to challenge what it calls a breach of Nigeria’s democratic values and an affront to party discipline.
Beyond the legal challenge, the party also criticized the ruling APC, describing it as “a crumbling house of contradictions.” PDP officials alleged that the recent wave of defections into the APC only exposes deep internal divisions and a desperate attempt to maintain relevance amid rising public dissatisfaction.
“The APC may be celebrating today, but it is merely postponing its implosion. When a party becomes a refuge for defectors without a common vision, disintegration is inevitable,” the statement added.
