Several United States government agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and Department of State, are set to release investigative files related to a decades-old alleged drug case involving Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This disclosure follows a directive from the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, which mandated transparency in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) suit filed by American activist Aaron Greenspant.

The investigation, which reportedly dates back to the 1990s, has been the subject of multiple FOIA requests submitted between 2022 and 2023. The court ruled that withholding the documents was “neither logical nor plausible,” emphasizing the importance of public access to information.

While the Nigerian Presidency has downplayed the significance of the release, asserting that the documents contain no new or incriminating information, the case has sparked widespread interest both domestically and internationally.
