Quadri Yusuf Alabi, the 15-year-old who became a national sensation in February 2023 after a viral photo captured him standing in front of Peter Obi’s convoy during a campaign rally in Lagos, has revealed the harrowing conditions he endured during his recent incarceration at Kirikiri Prison.
In an exclusive interview, Alabi disclosed that his daily responsibilities in the prison involved cleaning human excrement from dawn until dusk. He described the experience as physically demanding and emotionally taxing, shedding light on the often-overlooked realities faced by incarcerated individuals.
Alabi's journey to Kirikiri began earlier this year when he was allegedly abducted by area boys who were upset over being excluded from the financial gifts he received following his viral moment. He was subsequently detained at the Amukoko Police Station and later arraigned with four strangers on charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, including allegations of stealing ₦579,000 and four mobile phones. His lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, contends that Alabi, a minor, is being unfairly targeted by the criminal justice system.
Despite the challenges, Alabi's story has garnered widespread attention, with many Nigerians expressing support and solidarity. His ordeal underscores the need for reform in the treatment of incarcerated individuals, particularly minors, and highlights the importance of ensuring humane conditions within the prison system.
