The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced the cancellation of centralized May Day celebrations in Rivers and Edo states, citing political interference and security concerns.

In Rivers State, the decision follows the imposition of emergency rule and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU) has directed civil servants to boycott the event in solidarity with the governor, emphasizing that the move aligns with a directive from the NLC’s national secretariat.

Similarly, in Edo State, the NLC has raised concerns over alleged political interference in its affairs, prompting the cancellation of large-scale celebrations.

Instead of traditional rallies, workers in both states have been advised to hold low-key events within their respective premises. The NLC has reiterated its commitment to protecting workers’ rights and ensuring their voices are heard despite the prevailing political climate.
