A coalition of Yoruba groups has issued a strong and urgent call to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, demanding immediate and decisive action to combat the growing terrorist threat across the southwestern region of Nigeria. In a joint statement released today, the groups expressed deep concern over the increasing attacks on communities, farmers, and law-abiding citizens in Yoruba land by armed bandits, kidnappers, and insurgents, and have called for the swift deployment of security forces to restore peace and safety to the region.
The groups, which include prominent cultural, political, and advocacy organizations, have pointed out that these violent activities are not only destabilizing the region but also undermining the socio-economic progress of the Southwest. They specifically urged President Tinubu to take bold steps to eliminate these terrorists and ensure that Yoruba people can live without the constant fear of abduction, robbery, and attacks on their livelihoods.
"We are deeply alarmed by the unabated violence, which has seen the rise of banditry, kidnappings for ransom, and the relentless terror inflicted upon our people. We are calling on President Tinubu, who has long advocated for the protection of citizens, to demonstrate that his administration is committed to safeguarding every Nigerian, especially those in Yoruba land," said the spokesperson for the coalition.
The groups emphasized that Yoruba land has historically been peaceful, with residents known for their hospitality, hard work, and rich cultural heritage. They noted that this rising threat could severely erode the region's reputation and development.
"The Yoruba people are resilient, but our resilience must not be tested to the point of losing our dignity and safety. It is imperative that the Federal Government acts swiftly and decisively to end the reign of terror in our land," the coalition stated.
