In a groundbreaking move, the military junta in Niger Republic announced today that it will soon introduce a government-issued license for the use of social media platforms. This decision comes as part of the regime's broader effort to regulate and oversee the digital landscape within the country, addressing concerns over the spread of misinformation and maintaining national security.

The junta emphasized that the licensing process will be open to both individuals and organizations, with the aim of ensuring responsible and lawful use of social media in the country. The initiative is expected to come into effect in the coming weeks and will require users to apply for a government-issued permit in order to access popular platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media sites.

“We believe this licensing system will empower the government to maintain order and prevent the misuse of social media, which has often been a source of instability and misinformation,” stated General Abdourahamane Tiani, leader of the junta. “This new regulation will ensure that social media is used constructively to support the nation’s development and security.”

The junta’s decision has raised concerns among human rights groups and critics who argue that such a measure could infringe on freedoms of expression and access to information. Several international organizations have called for dialogue with the junta to ensure that this move does not result in undue censorship or restriction of civil liberties.

The junta, however, assured the public that the licensing process will be fair and transparent, with strict adherence to the principles of security and public interest. Applications for the licenses will be processed through the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy, which will oversee the implementation of the new regulations.
