The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully destroyed counterfeit drugs and other illicit products worth over N1 trillion in a major operation held in Anambra State. This action is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to combat the growing problem of fake pharmaceuticals and protect public health in Nigeria.

The massive destruction, which took place on March 20, 2025, in a carefully coordinated operation, saw the disposal of thousands of tons of fake and substandard drugs, including life-threatening medications such as antibiotics, pain relievers, and essential vaccines. These dangerous products were intercepted by NAFDAC's enforcement team in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, including the police and customs officers.

Director General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, spoke during the event, emphasizing the agency's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerians. "The destruction of these fake drugs is a testament to our dedication to safeguarding public health. Counterfeit drugs pose a serious threat to the lives of Nigerians, and NAFDAC is committed to ridding the market of these dangerous products," she said.

Professor Adeyeye also highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by counterfeiters and reiterated the importance of collaborative efforts to tackle this issue. She urged Nigerians to always buy medicines from certified pharmacies and healthcare providers to avoid falling victim to fake products.

In addition to the destruction of counterfeit drugs, the operation also targeted other illicit goods, including substandard food items, unapproved cosmetics, and adulterated beverages. The N1 trillion worth of seized items represent an alarming scale of the illegal trade that continues to flourish despite heightened regulatory efforts.

The operation in Anambra is just one part of NAFDAC’s comprehensive strategy to protect the public from the harmful effects of substandard products. The agency has pledged to continue its crackdown on counterfeit drugs, enhance surveillance on manufacturing plants, and ramp up public awareness campaigns to inform Nigerians about the dangers of fake and substandard goods.
