In a significant move to enhance the well-being of children in the state, the Kwara State Government has announced the extension of free X-ray services and tuberculosis (TB) treatment to all children across the state. This initiative aims to increase the early detection and treatment of tuberculosis, a disease that poses a serious health threat to children, while improving overall healthcare accessibility for vulnerable populations.

The announcement was made by the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ahmed Abdulrahman, during a press briefing held in Ilorin. He emphasized that the initiative is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to combat tuberculosis and ensure that every child receives the necessary medical care to live a healthy life.

“Tuberculosis is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children in many parts of the world, including Nigeria. We are committed to eradicating this disease and ensuring our children receive the best possible healthcare,” Dr. Abdulrahman said. “By providing free X-rays and treatment, we are not only tackling TB at the root but also making significant strides in improving the overall health of our children.”

The free X-ray services will be available at all government-owned health centers across the state, with trained health personnel ensuring that the diagnostic process is seamless for both parents and children. Additionally, the state government will provide free TB treatment, including medications, to children diagnosed with the disease.

The Kwara State Government is collaborating with international health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC), to ensure the effective implementation of this initiative.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to take their children for screening, especially those with a history of persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, fever, or contact with individuals diagnosed with tuberculosis. The initiative aims to provide timely diagnoses, reduce the spread of tuberculosis, and significantly lower the number of new cases in the state.

Dr. Abdulrahman concluded by expressing confidence that this initiative would have a lasting impact on the health sector in Kwara, with a particular focus on reducing childhood tuberculosis, which remains a major public health concern.
