In a dramatic political shift, former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has announced his departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing what he described as "contemptuous treatment" by the party leadership. The move, which has sent ripples through the political landscape, sees El-Rufai joining the Social Democratic Party (SDP), marking a significant departure from the ruling party he was once a prominent member of.
El-Rufai, who served two terms as Governor of Kaduna State and was a key figure in APC’s rise to power, expressed deep disappointment in the party’s leadership, accusing it of neglecting its founding principles and sidelining its loyal members. In his statement, El-Rufai emphasized that the APC’s current trajectory no longer aligns with his vision for Nigeria, which centers on integrity, accountability, and the welfare of the people.
“I joined the APC because I believed in its transformative potential, but over time, I have witnessed a lack of respect for democratic values and the principles that should guide a party in power. The contemptuous treatment I have received from the party’s leadership, despite my years of unwavering service and commitment, has forced me to make this difficult decision,” El-Rufai stated.
He further revealed that his decision to join the SDP stems from the party’s commitment to offering an alternative vision for Nigeria’s future, one based on unity, economic progress, and social justice. El-Rufai expressed confidence in the SDP’s ability to challenge the status quo and bring about the reforms Nigeria desperately needs.
The ex-Governor’s defection is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape, especially in the northern region, where he has remained a strong figure. El-Rufai’s move comes on the heels of increasing discontent within the APC ranks, with many loyalists feeling marginalized and ignored by the party’s leadership.
The Social Democratic Party (SDP), in a response, welcomed El-Rufai into its fold, hailing his decision as a bold step toward revitalizing the Nigerian political system. The SDP promised to work closely with El-Rufai to develop policies that address the pressing needs of Nigerians and create a platform for inclusive governance.
