The founder of the African Action Congress (AAC) and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has announced that his team is compiling the names of individuals allegedly wrongfully arrested under the Cybercrimes Act by the current Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and the police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

According to Sowore, the arrests, which he claims were carried out illegally and without proper due process, target activists, journalists, and other Nigerians who are exercising their right to freedom of expression, particularly on social media. Sowore expressed concern over the abuse of power by the police leadership and has vowed to expose the full extent of these actions.

“We are currently compiling a list of victims who have fallen prey to the illegal arrests made by the IGP and his spokesperson,” said Sowore. “It is a clear violation of their fundamental rights. The Cybercrimes Act should not be used as a tool for suppressing dissent or stifling the voices of Nigerians who are peacefully expressing their opinions. These individuals deserve justice, and we are committed to ensuring their voices are heard.”

Sowore also criticized the role of the police leadership, accusing them of using the Cybercrimes Act to intimidate and harass anyone critical of the government. He emphasized that this situation marks a grave departure from democratic principles and the rule of law.

“This is not just an attack on individuals but on the very foundation of democracy,” Sowore added. “We will continue to track and document every case, and we will ensure that those responsible for these illegal arrests are held accountable. Nigerians have the right to free speech, and we will stand with them.”
