The United Action Front (UAFCS) strongly condemns the recent invasion of the Lagos State House of Assembly by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). The unwarranted disruption of legislative proceedings, which took place on February 17, 2025, marks a dangerous escalation in the erosion of democratic institutions in Nigeria and a blatant assault on the principle of separation of powers.
The UAFCS views this invasion as a direct affront to the autonomy of state governments and the integrity of the Nigerian legislative process. The actions of the DSS, including the forceful disruption of a duly constituted assembly, are nothing short of an attempt to undermine the democratic will of the people and the functioning of the Lagos State legislature.
We firmly believe that the role of security agencies is to protect the lives and property of citizens, not to interfere in the internal affairs of state legislative bodies. This act of intimidation is not only an abuse of power but also a clear manifestation of authoritarian tendencies that threaten the very foundation of Nigeria’s democracy.
The UAFCS calls on the Federal Government to immediately cease such unlawful acts and reaffirm its commitment to the rule of law, democratic governance, and respect for the autonomy of state institutions. The persistent use of state security agencies as instruments of political oppression is deeply concerning and could ultimately lead to the transformation of Nigeria into a police state.
