The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed a total of 24,846 cases of diphtheria in the country, underscoring the urgent need for continued vigilance, vaccination, and public health intervention.

The NCDC’s latest report reveals a significant increase in the number of diphtheria cases across multiple states. This development highlights the ongoing public health challenge posed by the disease, which has resulted in both morbidity and mortality in affected regions. The NCDC is working closely with state governments, health professionals, and international partners to mitigate the spread of the disease and provide support to impacted communities.

Diphtheria, a highly contagious bacterial infection, primarily affects the respiratory system, leading to severe complications such as breathing difficulties, heart failure, and nerve damage. The NCDC stresses the importance of vaccination, as the diphtheria vaccine is a proven preventive measure. Despite this, the country is grappling with immunization gaps that have left vulnerable populations at risk.

The NCDC has urged all parents and guardians to ensure that their children are up to date with their immunization schedules. Additionally, health authorities are implementing rigorous public awareness campaigns to educate the public on recognizing symptoms and seeking immediate medical care in case of suspected cases.

"We are deeply concerned about the rise in diphtheria cases in Nigeria," said Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa, Director-General of the NCDC. "The fight against diphtheria requires a collective effort from all Nigerians. We must prioritize vaccination, adhere to health guidelines, and work together to control this outbreak."
