In a significant milestone for the state’s infrastructure development, the Lagos State Government has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a renowned global construction firm to begin the development of the Lekki-Epe International Airport. This project marks a major step toward expanding Lagos’s aviation sector and boosting the state's economy.
The MoU, signed today in the presence of key stakeholders, outlines the terms and framework for the construction of the highly anticipated airport, which will be situated in the Lekki-Epe corridor, one of Lagos’s most rapidly developing regions. The project is expected to significantly enhance transportation infrastructure, create thousands of jobs, and open up new opportunities for both international and domestic air travel.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, speaking at the signing ceremony, emphasized the importance of the Lekki-Epe International Airport as a cornerstone of Lagos's economic growth. "This partnership with a world-class construction firm reflects our commitment to developing infrastructure that will not only meet the growing demand for air travel but also position Lagos as a major global transportation hub," he said.
The new international airport will be designed to accommodate a growing volume of passenger and cargo traffic, supporting Nigeria's trade and tourism sectors. Expected to serve as a modern and efficient transport gateway, the Lekki-Epe International Airport will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including multiple terminals, advanced security systems, and enhanced passenger services.
The construction is scheduled to begin in 2025, with completion slated for 2028. Once operational, the airport will help alleviate congestion at Lagos's Murtala Muhammed International Airport, providing an alternative route for international and local flights and reducing pressure on existing aviation infrastructure.
In addition to boosting the aviation industry, the development of the Lekki-Epe International Airport is poised to spur economic growth in the surrounding area. The project will foster real estate development, improve connectivity, and attract both foreign and local investments, contributing to the overall development of the region.
"We are proud to be part of this transformative project that will reshape the aviation landscape in Lagos and Nigeria. This partnership is an important step towards achieving sustainable economic growth and enhancing Lagos’s global competitiveness," said the representative from the construction firm.
