King Charles Pays Tribute to Namibia’s Late Founding Father, Sam Nujoma

His Majesty King Charles III has expressed his heartfelt tribute to the late Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s first president and a pioneering figure in the country’s fight for independence. In a statement released today, the King praised Nujoma’s unwavering dedication to his nation, his leadership during its transition to independence, and his lasting influence on Namibia and the world.


Nujoma, who passed away on February 9, 2025, at the age of 93, was a central figure in the struggle for Namibia’s independence from South Africa’s apartheid regime. As the founding president, Nujoma led the country with steadfast determination, shaping Namibia’s political landscape and promoting its growth as a democratic and peaceful nation.


King Charles highlighted the deep bond between the United Kingdom and Namibia, noting that Nujoma’s legacy was admired globally, including in Britain. His Majesty referred to Nujoma as a symbol of resilience and hope, whose vision for a free and independent Namibia inspired generations.


“It is with great respect that I honor the memory of Sam Nujoma, a remarkable leader whose lifelong commitment to his people helped bring about a new chapter for Namibia,” said King Charles in his statement. “His leadership, both during the struggle for freedom and in shaping his nation post-independence, will be remembered for years to come. My thoughts are with the people of Namibia as they mourn the loss of this great statesman.”


King Charles also extended his deepest condolences to the Nujoma family, the government, and the people of Namibia during this time of national grief. The King reaffirmed his commitment to further strengthening the enduring friendship between the United Kingdom and Namibia.
