The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported severe devastation in 32 communities across Niger State following the release of water from the Jebba Dam. According to the agency, the incident has resulted in the destruction of over 1,097 hectares of farmlands, impacting the livelihoods of 544 farmers in the region.
The unexpected water release, which was carried out due to rising water levels in the dam, has led to widespread flooding that has inundated farms, destroyed crops, and left many farmers in dire financial distress. The flooding has caused significant damage to agricultural infrastructure, further complicating efforts to recover from the loss.
NEMA has activated its emergency response teams to provide immediate assistance to the affected communities. Efforts are being made to assess the full extent of the damage and provide necessary relief materials such as food, shelter, and medical aid. NEMA officials have also begun working in collaboration with local governments and agricultural agencies to assess the long-term impacts on the affected farming communities.
The agency has urged farmers and residents in the surrounding areas to stay alert and follow all safety measures in the coming weeks. NEMA has also called on state and federal authorities to consider providing compensation and other forms of support to help the farmers recover from this catastrophic event.
