In a statement that has quashed widespread speculation, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has unequivocally denied claims that he is planning to run for the presidency of Nigeria in the 2027 elections.

Responding to growing rumors that have circulated in both political and media circles, Dr. Adesina addressed the issue head-on, stating, “I never said I’m running. My focus remains squarely on advancing the mission of the African Development Bank and driving economic transformation across the continent.”

Adesina’s remarks come amid rising political discourse surrounding the 2027 presidential race in Nigeria, with numerous reports indicating that his name was being mentioned as a potential candidate due to his high-profile role in international development. However, Dr. Adesina, who has served as the AfDB President since 2015, emphasized his dedication to the Bank’s mission to spur growth and development across Africa, ensuring a prosperous future for millions of citizens.

“I remain committed to my work at the African Development Bank. My energy, time, and efforts are all channeled towards ensuring that AfDB continues its role as a catalyst for Africa’s economic success,” Adesina continued. “Any suggestion that I am considering political office is not only inaccurate but detracts from the important work we are doing to improve lives across the continent.”

The AfDB President’s statement follows a period of speculation fueled by his impactful tenure, which has seen the Bank make significant strides in projects such as infrastructure development, climate change resilience, and the promotion of sustainable agricultural growth across Africa.

Dr. Adesina also took the opportunity to reaffirm his focus on fostering public-private partnerships to support key sectors of the African economy, highlighting the AfDB’s role in achieving the continent’s Agenda 2063 for sustainable development.
