In a scathing critique of the Nigerian political landscape, former Governor of Rivers State and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has accused politicians in office of prioritizing personal gain over the welfare of the Nigerian people. Amaechi, speaking at a recent public engagement, stated that many politicians enter office with the sole intention of exploiting the system for personal wealth, power, and influence, rather than serving the public.
During his address, Amaechi expressed concern that a significant portion of Nigeria's political elite is more focused on "killing, stealing, and remaining in power" than enacting meaningful reforms that address the country’s pressing issues. He called out the pervasive corruption and the lack of accountability within Nigeria's political system, which, according to him, hampers progress and undermines the democratic process.
"In our country today, many of those in power are more concerned with amassing personal wealth and clinging to power than working towards a better future for Nigerians. The priorities of the people are often ignored, while the few in power continue to enrich themselves at the expense of the nation's development," Amaechi said.
Amaechi’s remarks come amidst growing public dissatisfaction with the state of governance and corruption in the country, with many citizens demanding greater transparency and responsibility from their leaders. He also called for greater participation from Nigerians in holding their leaders accountable, stressing that the fight for change must come from both the political class and the electorate.
The former governor emphasized that the solution to Nigeria’s political malaise lies in the collective will of the people and a reformed political culture that places public service above self-interest. He urged Nigerians to demand leadership that is rooted in integrity, vision, and the commitment to national progress.
