In a significant move to enhance national identity and cohesion, the Nigerian Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has confirmed the reintroduction of History as a core subject in primary and secondary school curricula across the nation. This decision comes thirteen years after the subject was removed from the educational framework in the 2009/2010 academic session.

During an end-of-year review on Channels Television, Minister Adamu emphasized that the absence of History in schools has contributed to a disconnect among Nigerians regarding their shared heritage and evolution as a nation. He stated, "The removal of History from our curriculum was a monumental mistake that has had lasting negative consequences on our national identity."

The reintroduction initiative includes comprehensive training for approximately 3,700 history teachers selected from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. This training aims to equip educators with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively teach the subject, which is crucial for fostering an understanding of Nigeria's rich past and diverse cultures.

Adamu highlighted that History is essential for instilling patriotism and civic values among students. He noted, "A sound knowledge of our past is fundamental to building a cohesive society. It helps us appreciate our identity and learn from our experiences."
