In a strategic move to support local farmers and boost agricultural production, the Borno State Government has announced a new initiative to subsidize the price of petrol to N600 per litre for farmers across the state. This decision is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to ease the economic challenges faced by farmers and enhance food security within the state.

The initiative, which will take effect immediately, aims to provide affordable access to fuel, a vital resource for farmers who rely on fuel-powered machinery for planting, irrigation, harvesting, and transporting their produce. By significantly reducing the cost of petrol, the state government is directly addressing one of the major barriers to agricultural productivity and improving the livelihoods of farmers.

Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, in announcing the subsidy, emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector. "Our farmers are the backbone of our economy, and this intervention is a direct response to their needs. We understand the challenges that rising fuel costs have imposed on agricultural activities, and by subsidizing petrol, we are making it easier for farmers to carry out their essential work. This will not only enhance food production but also contribute to the overall development of the state," Governor Zulum said.

The subsidy will be available at designated filling stations across the state, where farmers can access petrol at the reduced price upon presenting relevant identification or proof of their involvement in agricultural activities. The program is expected to benefit thousands of farmers in Borno, especially in rural areas, where fuel costs have been a significant burden.

The Borno State Government has also pledged to monitor the program to ensure transparency and accountability, with local agricultural cooperatives playing a key role in distributing the benefits to deserving farmers.

"This subsidy is just one part of a broader plan to revitalize agriculture in Borno," the Governor added. "We are working on various fronts to improve infrastructure, provide training, and ensure access to essential farming inputs. Our goal is to make Borno a leading producer of food in Nigeria."
