A brewing crisis has emerged at the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) following a dramatic walkout by members of the institution’s Vice Chancellor (VC) Selection Board. The members staged their exit in protest of moves to impose the Acting VC, Professor Maikudi, as the permanent VC, despite concerns over his qualifications.

The Selection Board, responsible for selecting a new VC for the university, had convened a crucial meeting to discuss the final stages of the appointment process. However, tension escalated when members became aware of efforts by certain influential parties within the university administration to install Professor Maikudi as the new VC, bypassing proper procedures and qualifications.

The protesting board members have expressed serious concerns over what they describe as an attempt to undermine the integrity of the selection process. According to sources close to the board, the Acting VC, Professor Maikudi, has faced scrutiny over his professional credentials and qualifications, raising doubts about his ability to effectively lead the university.

“The move to impose an Acting VC who is allegedly unqualified for the role is not only a breach of our internal procedures but also a serious threat to the academic and administrative future of this institution,” one of the board members stated. “We will not be complicit in undermining the credibility of the university.”

This incident has raised alarm among faculty members, students, and stakeholders, who are now questioning the transparency of the appointment process. Calls for accountability and a fair, merit-based selection process are growing louder, with several academic unions and student organizations warning of potential unrest if the crisis is not resolved.
