The Nigerian Defence Chief has raised alarms about the escalating threat posed by the Lukarawa terrorist group, which was initially perceived as a local militia aimed at combating banditry. Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, emphasized that the group's transformation from a community protector to a significant security threat warrants urgent attention and action.

Lukarawa emerged around 2016 as a self-defence force in Sokoto State, created by local leaders to address rampant banditry. However, following a military coup in Niger in July 2023, which disrupted joint security operations along the border, the group has evolved into a radical faction imposing strict religious laws and exerting control over local communities. Their activities have recently expanded into Kebbi State, culminating in violent attacks and significant casualties, including a deadly incident in Mera village that resulted in multiple fatalities and cattle theft.

“The Lukarawa group has exploited local grievances and governance gaps, leveraging economic hardships to recruit vulnerable individuals,” General Buba stated. “Their operations are not just criminal; they are ideologically driven and pose a direct challenge to our national security.”

The Defence Headquarters has classified Lukarawa as a terrorist organization with affiliations to extremist groups operating in the Sahel region, particularly those from Mali and Niger. This connection raises concerns about their potential to collaborate with other terrorist factions and further destabilize the region.

In light of these developments, the Nigerian military is ramping up operations against Lukarawa. Troops have been deployed to affected areas in Sokoto and Kebbi states to restore peace and security. General Buba reiterated the importance of community cooperation in these efforts: “We urge local populations to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Together, we can dismantle this threat before it becomes entrenched.”
