The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of several individuals, including Olori Naomi Ogunwusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, following a tragic stampede at a children's funfair in Ibadan. The incident, which occurred on December 18, has resulted in at least 35 confirmed fatalities and numerous injuries among attendees.
The stampede took place at the Islamic High School Bashorun during an event organized by Ogunwusi's foundation, the Wings Foundation. Originally intended for 5,000 participants, the event attracted over 7,500 attendees, leading to chaos as families rushed to enter the venue. Eyewitnesses reported that many victims were trapped at the main gate as panic ensued when the crowd surged forward.
Governor Seyi Makinde expressed his condolences and emphasized the need for thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. "This is a heartbreaking incident that has left many families in mourning," he stated. "We are committed to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable."
Emergency services responded swiftly, transporting victims to various hospitals across Ibadan. Reports indicate that several children were declared dead upon arrival at medical facilities, with others receiving treatment for their injuries.
The police have launched an investigation into the event's organization and crowd management practices. In addition to Ogunwusi, other key organizers have been taken into custody as authorities seek to understand how such a large crowd was allowed without adequate safety measures in place.
