The House of Representatives has summoned top military officials in Nigeria to provide an explanation regarding the ongoing detention of the President of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Bello Bodejo. The summons comes after reports that Bodejo, a key figure in the advocacy for the rights of cattle herders across Nigeria, has been detained under questionable circumstances.
In a statement issued on Monday, the House expressed deep concern over the actions of the military, which it described as overreach, and its potential to escalate tensions in the country’s ongoing security challenges. The lawmakers emphasized that while national security remains a priority, due process must be observed, and individuals should not be subjected to arbitrary detention, particularly without clear legal justification.
Rep. Yakubu Gagdi, Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, who spearheaded the motion, stated, "We are committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all Nigerians, regardless of their position or association, are treated fairly and in accordance with the Constitution. The military must clarify the reasons for detaining Bodejo, and we expect full transparency in the matter."
The House called for an urgent briefing from the military leadership, including the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, and other relevant security agencies, to address the issue and provide a clear explanation of the circumstances surrounding the detention of the Miyetti Allah President.
