A coalition of legal rights groups and civil society organizations has written a formal letter to the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), demanding immediate action and sanctions against individuals involved in the controversial incarceration of prominent activist and lawyer, Farotimi.

The letter, addressed to NBA President Yakubu Maikyau, seeks sanctions against Chief Afe Babalola, a prominent Nigerian legal practitioner, the Chief Magistrate of Ekiti State, and other key actors who have been implicated in the unlawful detention of Farotimi. The groups are calling for a thorough investigation into the events surrounding Farotimi's arrest, which they describe as a direct violation of human rights and the rule of law.

Farotimi, who has been an outspoken critic of various governmental policies and practices, was arrested on dubious charges following his advocacy for judicial reforms. The groups contend that his incarceration was politically motivated, designed to silence his calls for accountability and transparency within Nigeria's legal and political systems.

The petitioners assert that Chief Afe Babalola, who is associated with the legal proceedings, should face disciplinary measures for his role in enabling the illegal detention, while the Chief Magistrate of Ekiti State has come under scrutiny for allegedly ignoring due process in the case. These actions, the groups argue, undermine the integrity of Nigeria's legal system and threaten the fundamental rights of citizens to free speech and a fair trial.

In the letter, the coalition stresses the need for the NBA to exercise its authority to protect the rule of law, uphold justice, and ensure that those who act in violation of legal standards are held accountable. The groups also call on the NBA to demonstrate its commitment to legal ethics and human rights by taking swift and decisive action.
