Prominent Nigerian activist, Olamide Thomas, has filed a lawsuit against the Nigerian Police Force and several unidentified individuals over what he claims to be unlawful detention and abuse of his fundamental human rights. The lawsuit, which was submitted to the Federal High Court today, demands a public apology from the Nigerian Police, as well as N100 million in damages for the violation of his rights.
Thomas, who has been an outspoken advocate for social justice, human rights, and police reform in Nigeria, alleges that his recent detention was politically motivated and without legal basis. According to the complaint, Thomas was arrested on December 12, 2024, while participating in a peaceful demonstration calling for reforms in the Nigerian police force. Despite his legal status as a peaceful protester, Thomas was allegedly held for over 48 hours without charge or access to legal counsel.
In the suit, Thomas contends that the unlawful detention has caused irreparable harm to his reputation, personal freedom, and well-being. The activist's legal team argues that the actions of the Nigerian Police were not only unconstitutional but also reflect a broader pattern of abuse against activists and citizens exercising their right to protest in the country.
“I am not only seeking justice for myself but also for every Nigerian who has faced similar violations of their basic rights. Our voices will not be silenced by intimidation and unlawful acts,” Thomas said in a statement. “This lawsuit is a step toward ensuring accountability and upholding the rule of law in Nigeria.”
The lawsuit seeks redress through a public apology from the Nigerian Police, an acknowledgment of the wrongful detention, and the payment of N100 million in damages to Thomas for his suffering, distress, and loss of opportunities during the period of detention.
Thomas' case is expected to draw attention to the ongoing issues surrounding police brutality and the rights of citizens to peacefully assemble in Nigeria. His legal team has expressed confidence that the court will take swift action to hold those responsible accountable and provide a clear message that unlawful detention will not be tolerated.
