President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially honored the memory of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni leaders who were executed by the military regime of General Sani Abacha in 1995. This tribute was delivered during a special message commemorating the 2024 Ogoni Martyrs Remembrance Day, reflecting the administration's commitment to healing and reconciliation among Nigeria's diverse ethnic nationalities.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed solidarity with the National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP) and all Ogoni citizens. He emphasized that the sacrifices made by these martyrs are pivotal to acknowledging the historical struggles faced by the Ogoni people in their fight for environmental justice and human rights.

"This year’s theme, ‘After Price, Comes Prize,’ symbolizes our collective resolve to confront past injustices while aspiring for a brighter future," President Tinubu stated. "We honor their memory by recognizing the sacrifices made and pledging to strive for a future characterized by peace, justice, and sustainable development for all communities, particularly those in the Niger Delta."

The President reiterated his administration's commitment to addressing historical grievances and fostering dialogue among all ethnic groups in Nigeria. He acknowledged that the execution of Saro-Wiwa and his compatriots was a tragic consequence of their courageous stand against environmental degradation caused by oil exploration in Ogoniland.

"As we remember the Ogoni Martyrs, let us honor their legacy by committing to a future where such injustices are no longer tolerated and where the voices of all Nigerians are heard and respected," he added.

The nine martyrs, including Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John Kpuine, were executed following a controversial trial widely criticized for its lack of fairness. Their deaths have since become emblematic of the struggle for environmental rights and social justice in Nigeria.
