A significant confrontation between security agencies erupted over the attempted arrest of Chinese nationals allegedly engaged in illegal mining activities at a site in Libata, Ngaski Local Government Area of Kebbi State. The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding illegal mining operations and the complexities of law enforcement in the region.
On November 8, 2024, a specialized unit from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), known as the Mining Marshals, initiated a sting operation aimed at apprehending individuals illegally mining lithium at the site. However, their efforts were thwarted by military and police personnel who claimed to have been deployed to protect the miners under orders from higher authorities.
The clash raises serious questions about the role of security forces in safeguarding illegal operations. Eyewitness accounts indicate that upon learning of the impending operation, the Chinese nationals temporarily ceased their activities and retreated to their living quarters. Despite identifying themselves and declaring their mission to the military and police present, the Mining Marshals were unable to proceed with the arrests due to resistance from these security forces.
Engr. Adamu Tah, CEO of El-Tahdam Exploration Limited, which holds a valid mining lease for the area and is in the process of establishing a $50 million lithium processing plant, expressed his frustration over the situation. He stated that the illegal miners were operating without proper licenses and were obstructing his company's efforts to commence legal operations. "The Chinese are exploiting resources under a self-acclaimed license while denying us access to our own site," Tah asserted.
The Mining Marshals Commander, Attah John Onoja, emphasized that their mission was not to halt mining but to ensure that all operations are conducted legally. "We are committed to enforcing lawful mining practices in Nigeria," he stated. "Our goal is to protect legitimate investments and ensure compliance with mining regulations."
This incident has drawn attention from various stakeholders concerned about illegal mining's impact on local communities and the environment. The ongoing situation underscores the need for coordinated efforts among security agencies to address illegal activities effectively while supporting legitimate business operations.
