In a bid to improve safety and sanity among the Motoring public
operating on Lagos roads, the State Government, through the Lagos State
Driver's Institute (LASDRI) has recognised and awarded 30 professional drivers
for safety compliance and exemplary conduct.
Speaking at the Year 2024 Drivers Recognition and Award Ceremony
held on Tuesday at LASDRI'S headquarters in Oshodi with the theme: "Driver
Education: A Strategy for Human Capital Development in a 21st Century
Economy", the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr.
Olawale Musa stated that the ceremony provides an opportunity to acknowledge
and celebrate drivers for their exemplary professionalism.
He commended the drivers for their perseverance in long hours on
the road enduring harsh weather conditions, managing the numerous challenges
and ensuring safe arrivals at destinations.
The Permanent Secretary stressed that driving is a complex task
that requires a high level of physical, cognitive and behavioural skills and
responses, noting that recognising and rewarding exceptional individuals is
more than just a nod of thanks but a crucial reminder of the indispensable role
drivers play in keeping the nation moving.
Earlier, the General Manager of LASDRI, Mrs. Tiamiyu Afusat
stated that the award is in recognition of the hard work, perseverance and
pride that every driver brings to their job and also the commitment they
demonstrate to making the road safer for other road users.
Mrs. Tiamiyu emphasised that driving is not just a job but also
a skill, an art, and a responsibility. She further highlighted the qualities of
professional drivers on display as they navigate the intricate network of
roads, ensuring that people and goods reach their destinations safely.
Also speaking, the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic
Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare Oki, urged drivers to always
prioritise safety while on the road.
Mr. Oki encouraged the award recipients to renew their commitment
to promoting a culture of safety, responsibility, and continuous learning. He
noted that LASDRI remains dedicated to providing top-notch training, resources,
and support to ensure that drivers are not only skilled but also equipped to
navigate the ever-changing landscape. He further emphasised the government's
commitment to a safe and healthy environment.
The event attracted drivers from the government, corporate
organisations, and Transport Unions, among others.
