The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Julius Anelu, the Accountant General of Edo State, along with two other government officials, in connection with significant withdrawals from the state’s accounts. This action comes just days before the end of Governor Godwin Obaseki's administration.
The arrests were made following a series of investigations into the financial activities of the state government. According to sources within the EFCC, approximately N24.6 billion was deposited into the state’s account recently; however, it was reported that nearly N14 billion was withdrawn within a week of this deposit. The EFCC has stated that these actions raised substantial concerns regarding potential financial misconduct and mismanagement of state funds.
A spokesperson for the EFCC indicated that the commission's primary aim is to safeguard the financial integrity of Edo State and prevent any further unauthorized withdrawals. "We acted swiftly to protect the state’s assets and ensure that public funds are not misappropriated during this critical transition period," the source stated.
The arrests have reportedly led to a halt in various government operations, including delays in salary payments to civil servants and other statutory obligations. This disruption has raised concerns among public servants who rely on timely payments for their livelihoods.
In light of these developments, incoming Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo has called for thorough investigations into the financial dealings of the outgoing administration. He has previously accused Governor Obaseki’s government of engaging in last-minute borrowing and financial malfeasance.
