Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for their simultaneous international trips during a time of severe economic hardship in Nigeria. Obi's comments come as both leaders are abroad, raising concerns about their commitment to addressing pressing national issues.
In a statement released via his official social media account, Obi expressed his dismay over President Tinubu's extended absence from the country, which has now surpassed the initially promised two-week duration. He emphasized that the timing of these trips is particularly troubling given the current economic challenges facing Nigerians.
"This does not represent the kind of fiscal responsibility and common sense expected from leaders whose people are facing severe hunger and poverty," Obi stated. He highlighted that while Tinubu is in France for a global financial summit, Shettima is traveling to Sweden for bilateral engagements, a decision he deems unnecessary given their proximity.
Obi pointed out that Tinubu could have easily attended the event in Sweden on his way back from France, thus saving valuable time and resources. "Instead, the Vice President was sent on a 9-hour flight from Abuja to Stockholm when the President could have completed the task with a 2-hour journey from Paris," he noted. This decision not only reflects poor judgment but also raises questions about the leadership's priorities during a crisis.
The former Anambra State governor further criticized the administration's justification for their absence, arguing that it is unacceptable for both the President and Vice President to be away from Nigeria simultaneously. "While it is arguable that there is no vacuum in governance with their absence, it is concerning for a country grappling with myriad domestic problems," he added.
Obi's remarks come at a time when many Nigerians are struggling with the consequences of recent economic policies that have exacerbated poverty and hardship across the nation. He called for immediate action and leadership presence to navigate through these challenging times.
"This is the time to show true and committed leadership by making decisions that prioritize the well-being of our citizens and effectively manage our scarce national resources," Obi concluded.
