The Edo State Government has issued a formal ultimatum to Senator Monday Okpebholo, the recently elected governor of Edo State, demanding that he provide evidence within 48 hours to substantiate his allegations of widespread looting and vandalism against the outgoing administration led by Governor Godwin Obaseki. Failure to do so will require him to issue a public apology.
Senator Okpebholo had previously accused the Obaseki administration of engaging in massive looting and vandalism of government properties, including vehicles, furniture, and essential supplies, just weeks before the official handover date. In his statements made on October 16, he urged banks and financial institutions to refrain from approving loans to officials of the outgoing government, citing concerns over potential misuse of state resources during this transitional period.
In response to these serious allegations, the Edo State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Chris Nehikhare, emphasized that such claims are not only damaging but also unfounded. “These allegations are reckless and must be substantiated with credible evidence,” Nehikhare stated. “The Edo State Government is prepared to defend its integrity against any baseless accusations that seek to undermine public trust.”
The ultimatum comes amid ongoing tensions as the state prepares for the transition of power scheduled for November 12, 2024. The government has called for a thorough investigation into any wrongdoing but insists that accusations must be backed by factual evidence rather than speculation.
In light of this situation, the Edo State Government urges all stakeholders to maintain decorum and focus on constructive dialogue as the state moves forward into a new administration. The government is committed to ensuring a smooth transition while upholding transparency and accountability in governance.
