The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a critical warning to residents living along the banks of the Rivers Benue and Niger, urging immediate relocation to higher ground due to rising water levels and the imminent threat of severe flooding. This advisory comes as the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) reports dangerously high water levels that have reached critical thresholds in several locations.

In a statement released today, NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, highlighted that areas such as Makurdi and Lokoja are particularly at risk, with water gauge data indicating levels exceeding nine meters between October 9 and 15. Continuous rainfall has exacerbated the situation, prompting urgent action to protect lives and property.

The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, emphasized the importance of vigilance during this precarious period. “We are at a critical juncture. Both natural and human-made factors are combining to increase the risks, and we must be vigilant. The time to act is now,” he stated during a ministerial briefing.

The government is also closely monitoring the management of the Kainji and Jebba dams to regulate water releases, aiming to mitigate downstream flooding. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local authorities and adhere strictly to safety guidelines.
