Tensions are escalating between the outgoing government of Edo State and the transition committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the two parties face significant disagreements over the transfer of governance documents. The joint transition committee meeting, which was scheduled to facilitate a smooth handover of power, has been adjourned indefinitely due to a lack of cooperation from the outgoing administration.
The APC transition committee, led by former Deputy Governor Pius Odubu, boycotted a crucial meeting on Tuesday, citing the failure of the Edo State government to provide essential documents in advance. According to Patrick Ikhariale, Secretary of the APC transition committee, the government has not met their requests for specific financial records and other vital information necessary for an effective transition. "We have had a series of communications, both oral and written, insisting that we need advance copies of any documents 24 hours before meetings," Ikhariale stated. He emphasized that the documents received thus far have primarily highlighted the achievements of Governor Godwin Obaseki's administration rather than addressing their inquiries regarding expenditures and other financial matters.
The standoff began after a meeting last week where Secretary to the State Government Joseph Eboigbe praised Obaseki's financial management but failed to deliver on promises to provide comprehensive records. The APC committee has expressed dissatisfaction with what they describe as inadequate information, which does not align with their expectations or global best practices for governmental transitions.
In response to these developments, Chris Nehikhare, Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, defended the outgoing government's position. He claimed that the APC's inquiries extend beyond what is customary in a transition process and should be addressed in the official handover notes.
As both sides remain at an impasse, it is unclear how this situation will affect the upcoming inauguration of Governor-elect Monday Okpebholo. The lack of cooperation could lead to significant delays in the transition process if not resolved promptly.
