The Nigerian Army has announced a significant development in its ongoing efforts to combat Boko Haram insurgency, with the surrender of 15 top commanders and their families in Borno State. This operation underscores the military's sustained pressure on terrorist enclaves and reflects the growing disillusionment among insurgents.
In a statement released by the Defence Headquarters, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed that these commanders surrendered between October 5 and October 10, 2024. The group includes key figures who have been instrumental in Boko Haram's operations over the years.
The surrender took place in various Local Government Areas (LGAs) including Mafa, Bama, Gwoza, and Monguno. Alongside the commanders, their families—comprising several adult males, females, and children—also sought refuge with the troops. This mass surrender is seen as a pivotal moment in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.
Major General Buba stated, “The recent surrenders are indicative of the relentless efforts by our troops and the strategic operations being conducted across Borno State. It is a clear message to those still engaged in insurgency that there is a path to peace and reintegration into society.”
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, commended the troops for their resilience and commitment to restoring peace in the region. He emphasized the importance of community support in these operations, urging citizens to continue providing actionable intelligence to security forces.
This development comes amidst broader efforts by the Nigerian government under President Bola Tinubu's administration to eliminate the threat posed by Boko Haram and its affiliates. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, recently highlighted these achievements as part of a larger narrative of success against terrorism during a public address.
The military encourages any remaining members of Boko Haram to consider surrendering and reintegrating into society peacefully. The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens while continuing its operations against terrorism.
