In preparation for the upcoming Edo State governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced the deployment of personnel across the state. This strategic move aims to ensure a smooth and orderly electoral process by enforcing compliance with vehicular regulations during the election period.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed emphasized the importance of maintaining traffic discipline to facilitate easy movement of voters and election officials. The FRSC's deployment is part of a broader security arrangement involving multiple law enforcement agencies tasked with ensuring a peaceful and credible election amidst rising concerns over potential violence and voter intimidation.
The Edo governorship election is particularly significant as it marks the transition from the current governor, Godwin Obaseki, who has served his two terms. With over two million voters expected to participate, the FRSC's role will be crucial in managing traffic flow and ensuring that emergency services can operate effectively throughout the election day.
In addition to traffic management, the FRSC will collaborate with other security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to uphold law and order. This coordinated effort is essential given recent trends of political violence in Edo State, which have raised concerns among voters about their safety at polling stations.
As part of its commitment to transparency and public safety, the FRSC urges all citizens to adhere to traffic regulations on election day and to report any suspicious activities that may threaten the integrity of the electoral process.
The Corps Marshal reiterated that the FRSC remains dedicated to supporting democratic governance in Nigeria by ensuring that every eligible voter can exercise their right without fear or hindrance.
