President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with a cash reward of $100,000 each, a flat for every player, and the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) national honour, in recognition of their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship.
The award was announced during a special reception at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where the President congratulated the team on winning their fifth consecutive African title, a feat that solidifies Nigeria’s dominance in women’s basketball on the continent.
President Tinubu praised the players for their courage, unity, and determination, stating: “D’Tigress have not only brought pride to our nation but have shown what is possible when Nigerians unite with purpose and discipline. You are worthy ambassadors of our great country.”
In addition to the financial gift and housing allocations, all members of the team, including coaching and support staff, were conferred with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) — one of Nigeria’s highest national honours.
The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who was also present at the ceremony, commended the women for inspiring young girls across the nation. She noted that the achievements of D’Tigress go beyond sports, as they challenge gender stereotypes and promote female empowerment.
The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, thanked the President for his “unprecedented gesture,” describing it as “a defining moment in the history of Nigerian sports and a clear statement that excellence will be rewarded under this administration.”
D’Tigress, led by captain Sarah Ogoke, expressed gratitude to the government and the Nigerian people, pledging to continue working hard and make the nation proud in future global tournaments, including the Paris 2025 World Qualifiers.
