The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed criticisms surrounding the recent meeting between him and Labour Party National Chairman, Julius Abure, stating that there is no crime in political leaders engaging in dialogue, regardless of party affiliation.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Wike maintained that political interactions across party lines are not only lawful but also essential for national development and democratic stability. He described the backlash over Abure’s visit as "unnecessary political hysteria" driven by ignorance and divisive sentiments.

“Politics is not war. It is about engagement, ideas, and relationships,” Wike said. “People must understand that in a democracy, politicians talking with one another should be seen as a sign of maturity, not betrayal.”

The visit by Abure to Wike’s residence earlier this week sparked intense reactions, especially from factions within the Labour Party and opposition supporters who viewed the meeting with suspicion. However, Wike, a former governor and a key figure in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisted that the meeting was cordial and focused on national issues, not political realignment.

“I have friends across political parties. That doesn’t mean I am plotting anything,” Wike added. “We must stop painting normal political discourse as a crime.”

The development comes amid growing tensions and realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political stakeholders positioning themselves strategically. Wike called for tolerance and respect for freedom of association, noting that the country’s democracy can only thrive when leaders engage across ideological boundaries.
