Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has reassured Nigerians living in Ghana that they are safe and welcomed, firmly stating that there is no place for xenophobia or discrimination within the Ghanaian society.

Speaking at a regional integration forum held in Accra on Friday, President Mahama emphasized the strong historical, cultural, and economic ties that bind Ghana and Nigeria. He dismissed recent social media rumors suggesting rising anti-Nigerian sentiment in Ghana as “baseless and dangerous misinformation.”

“Let me be clear: Ghanaians and Nigerians are brothers and sisters. We have lived together in peace for generations, and that is not about to change,” Mahama said. “There is no room for xenophobia in Ghana. Any individual or group attempting to sow division between our people is not speaking for the majority of Ghanaians.”

His comments follow concerns raised by some Nigerians living in Ghana about alleged harassment by local authorities and citizens. While acknowledging that there may be isolated incidents, Mahama urged the public not to generalize or allow misinformation to create unnecessary fear.

“No society is perfect, but Ghana does not tolerate hatred or violence toward any group. We must continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance, and respect that define the ECOWAS spirit,” he added.

Mahama also called on the media, civil society, and political leaders across West Africa to help promote peaceful coexistence and avoid narratives that fuel division.

The former president further praised the contributions of Nigerians to Ghana’s development, noting their presence in key sectors such as education, business, entertainment, and healthcare.

“Nigerians are not just visitors here. They are teachers, entrepreneurs, students, and neighbors contributing meaningfully to our communities. We are stronger together,” he affirmed.

Representatives of the Nigerian community in Ghana welcomed Mahama’s reassurance, urging authorities to further strengthen diplomatic relations and ensure fair treatment of all nationals residing in the country.

The Nigerian High Commission in Ghana also echoed the sentiment, stating in a brief statement that it remains committed to working with Ghanaian authorities to protect the rights and well-being of all Nigerian citizens.

President Mahama concluded by reiterating the need for unity among African nations in the face of growing global challenges.

“In these times, when the continent is facing economic, political, and security concerns, our unity as Africans must come first. Let no one divide us.”
