President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Dr. Doyin Abiola, describing her as a “media trailblazer, resilient patriot, and soldier of democracy” whose impact on Nigerian journalism and democratic development will remain indelible.
In a heartfelt condolence message issued by the State House, President Tinubu paid glowing tribute to the late veteran journalist and former Managing Director of the National Concord Newspaper, highlighting her groundbreaking role as the first female editor of a national newspaper in Nigeria and a tireless advocate for press freedom and democratic ideals.
“Dr. Doyin Abiola was more than a journalist. She was a visionary who broke barriers and set unmatched standards in Nigeria’s media space. Her unwavering dedication to truth, equity, and justice stood out, even during Nigeria’s darkest political moments,” the President said.
Tinubu further acknowledged her intellectual brilliance, professionalism, and her strong moral compass in the face of political adversity, especially during the struggles of the June 12 era, in which her husband, the late Chief MKO Abiola, played a historic role.
“In her commitment to democracy and national development, Dr. Abiola served as a stabilizing force in turbulent times and a voice of reason when truth was under siege. Nigeria has lost a rare gem.”
President Tinubu extended his condolences to the Abiola family, the Nigerian media community, and all those whose lives were touched by her legacy. He prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul and strength for her loved ones to bear the loss.
“As we mourn, we also celebrate a life of impact, courage, and exceptional service. Dr. Doyin Abiola’s contributions will continue to inspire generations of journalists, women leaders, and patriots,” the statement concluded.
