In a significant political overture ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, has publicly invited Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to return to the PDP, emphasizing the urgent need for opposition unity to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges.
During Peter Obi’s courtesy visit to the Bauchi Government House on Friday, Governor Bala praised Obi’s commitment to people-centered governance and his legacy in education and healthcare. He described Obi’s political approach as a “new lease of life” for Nigerian politics and called for a strategic alliance among opposition parties including PDP, LP, ADC, and SDP.
“We must harmonize our interests in the interest of the people of Nigeria,” Bala stated. “So please come back. That’s where you belong. Don’t go anywhere that is in disarray”.
Governor Bala criticized the current administration’s lack of planning and budgetary direction, warning that disunity among opposition parties only strengthens the ruling party’s grip on power. He stressed that politics must transcend seasonal gestures and instead focus on empathy, competence, and strategic development.
Peter Obi, in response, acknowledged the importance of collaboration and reiterated his commitment to a politics of development and compassion. He emphasized that alliances should not be about power-grabbing but about solving Nigeria’s problems together.
“Our politics must change. It has to be politics of development, politics of competence, politics of capacity and compassion,” Obi said.
During his visit, Obi also donated ₦15 million to two educational institutions in Bauchi, reinforcing his dedication to youth empowerment and education.
