In a heartbreaking testament to the escalating violence in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region, a survivor of a deadly attack in Benue State has come forward to share the devastating impact of the tragedy that took the lives of eight of their family members.

According to eyewitness accounts, armed gunmen stormed a rural community in the early hours of the morning, under the cover of rain, opening fire indiscriminately and targeting residential compounds. The survivor, who remains unnamed for security reasons, said:

“The rain had just started. We were all indoors. Suddenly, we heard gunshots—very close. They came in and shot everyone. I don’t know how I’m still here. I lost everyone—my mother, siblings, cousins. I’m the only one left.”

Local authorities and community leaders have condemned the attack, calling for immediate action and increased security presence across vulnerable villages in the state. Emergency responders and humanitarian groups are currently on the ground, offering support to survivors and assessing damage to property and farmland.

Governor Hyacinth Alia expressed deep sorrow over the incident and reiterated the government’s commitment to identifying the perpetrators and preventing future violence:

“This attack is not just an assault on one family—it’s an attack on our collective humanity. We must stand together and ensure justice is served.”

The incident adds to a growing list of violent attacks in the region, often attributed to disputes between farming communities and armed groups. Human rights advocates are urging the federal government to intensify efforts to resolve the root causes of the conflict, enhance surveillance, and provide trauma counseling for affected individuals.

Benue State has been at the center of recurring violence in recent years, with thousands displaced from their homes and farming communities. The state government, in collaboration with national security agencies, has launched multiple peace initiatives, but residents continue to call for more sustainable and community-driven solutions.
