Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has strongly condemned the Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for what he describes as "ethnically-charged and politically motivated" street renaming in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area.

Sowore criticized the move as an attempt to erase the cultural identity of non-Yoruba communities in Lagos, particularly the Igbo population, following the controversial renaming of several streets originally bearing Igbo names. According to reports, over 20 streets were recently renamed by the local council—with many previously named after individuals of Igbo origin now changed to Yoruba names or politically affiliated figures.

“Lagos belongs to all Nigerians, not just one ethnic group,” Sowore stated. “What the Sanwo-Olu-led government is allowing to happen under its watch is divisive and dangerous. It sends the wrong message that ethnic identity and political loyalty are now criteria for recognition in the state.”

Sowore emphasized that such actions undermine national unity and are inconsistent with the cosmopolitan nature of Lagos, a city historically built by people of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

He also noted that the renaming process was done without meaningful public engagement, transparency, or respect for the existing cultural context of the affected communities.

“It is alarming that public assets such as street names are being used to further ethnic superiority narratives and political sycophancy. This is a betrayal of the inclusive spirit that Lagos is known for,” Sowore said.

The activist called on civil society, traditional institutions, and well-meaning citizens to resist what he described as “state-backed cultural cleansing.” He also demanded that the Lagos State Government immediately reverse the street renaming exercise and initiate a proper consultation process involving all affected communities.
