In a bold and pointed statement likely to stir political waters, the Edo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Chris Nehikhare, declared that Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is “the least of our worries” in the state’s political affairs, emphasizing that the real issues facing Edo people go beyond political theatrics and name-dropping.

Speaking at a press briefing in Benin City, the Commissioner addressed what he described as “deliberate distractions” being thrown into the state’s political space ahead of the gubernatorial election. “Let’s be clear — Peter Obi is not on the ballot in Edo, and Edo people are too politically sophisticated to be swayed by superficial endorsements. We have bigger challenges to tackle — job creation, education, security, infrastructure — and that is where our focus lies,” Nehikhare stated.

The comment comes in response to growing claims by Labour Party supporters that Peter Obi’s influence will swing Edo in favour of the opposition. Nehikhare, however, dismissed the idea as overstated and misdirected. “While we respect Mr. Obi’s political journey, Edo is not a playground for political experiments. This state is focused on performance, not popularity contests,” he said.

Political observers believe the Commissioner’s statement underscores the confidence of the ruling party in its grassroots support and governance record, particularly under Governor Godwin Obaseki. With the Edo gubernatorial election drawing closer, the narrative appears to be shifting from party affiliations to credibility, continuity, and capacity.

Residents have expressed mixed reactions. Some view the statement as a reality check on the limits of Obi’s reach, while others consider it a slight against the former Anambra governor, known for his massive youth following and good governance credentials.

Regardless, the Commissioner reiterated that Edo State’s priorities remain unchanged. “We invite all well-meaning citizens to look beyond noise and focus on substance. The future of Edo depends on strategic planning, not soundbites.”
