The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched Phase 7 of the Kainji Mass Trials, marking a renewed commitment to justice, transparency, and the rule of law in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

The flag-off ceremony, held on Wednesday at the Kainji facility, was led by Major General Adamu Garba Laka, National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) under the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). He emphasized that the trials are a cornerstone of Nigeria’s strategy to uphold legal standards while addressing national security threats.

“It is truly encouraging to see the convergence of the judiciary, law enforcement, legal practitioners, and partners—once again united in purpose and duty,” said General Laka. “These trials reaffirm our resolve to confront terrorism through lawful and transparent means.”

The Kainji Mass Trials, which began in 2017, have seen hundreds of suspects—primarily linked to Boko Haram and ISWAP—prosecuted under Nigeria’s counterterrorism laws. This seventh phase continues that effort, with a focus on due process and human rights.

Representing the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the Director of Public Prosecution, Mohammed Babadoko Abubakar, praised the collaborative efforts of ONSA, the judiciary, and international partners. He reiterated the government’s determination to ensure justice is served to both victims and accused persons.

The trials also reflect Nigeria’s progress in strengthening its criminal justice system and addressing concerns raised by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). According to officials, these advancements have contributed significantly to Nigeria’s efforts to exit the FATF Grey List.
