The Nigeria Police Force has announced a major reshuffle in its leadership ranks as Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal officially assumes duty as the new Commissioner of Police in Ondo State. This follows the redeployment of CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, a move widely linked to the fallout from the June 12 Democracy Day protest in Akure.
According to police sources, CP Afolabi’s transfer comes amid internal reviews of the command’s handling of the protest, during which human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and his supporters were reportedly attacked by armed thugs. Afolabi had reportedly initiated an investigation into the incident, a decision that may have contributed to his sudden redeployment.
In his farewell remarks, Afolabi described the transfer as a routine administrative posting and highlighted his achievements during his tenure, including the dismantling of cult groups and the arrest of numerous kidnappers and armed robbers.
Taking over the reins, CP Lawal pledged to build on his predecessor’s successes and emphasized a renewed focus on professionalism, intelligence-led policing, and community collaboration. “With the support of the people of Ondo State and all security stakeholders, we will strengthen the fight against crime and ensure public safety,” Lawal stated during his inaugural briefing.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, also announced the deployment of new Commissioners of Police to four other states as part of a broader strategy to enhance operational efficiency and accountability across the country.
