Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced the launch of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the financial dealings of the previous administration led by former Governor Godwin Obaseki. This decision follows revelations that over N8 billion was allegedly paid to consultants for software-related services during Obaseki’s tenure.

Speaking at a victory parade held at the Government House in Benin City, Governor Okpebholo expressed deep concern over what he described as “questionable transactions” uncovered during a review of the Edo Geographic Information Service (EdoGIS). According to the Governor, a consultant was paid N6 billion for services rendered and an additional N2 billion for software development.

“We have the best brains in Edo’s civil service, yet the previous administration chose to outsource critical functions to consultants at exorbitant costs,” Governor Okpebholo stated. “We have since disengaged these consultants, trained our own people, and developed in-house solutions that are saving taxpayers billions.”

The Governor emphasized that the probe is not politically motivated but aimed at ensuring transparency, accountability, and justice for the people of Edo State. He cited further discrepancies, including a university receiving only N47 million in funding while a consultant was paid N51 million, calling the allocation “unacceptable and unjust.”

Governor Okpebholo assured citizens that the Commission of Inquiry will operate independently and conduct public hearings. Former officials may be summoned to account for their stewardship, and any wrongdoing will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

“Edo people deserve answers. We will open the books and ensure that anyone who mismanaged public funds is held accountable,” he said.

Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa echoed the Governor’s sentiments, pledging full support for the probe and reaffirming the administration’s commitment to good governance.
