It is with profound sorrow that the people of Ijebuland and the entire nation of Nigeria mourn the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.
Oba Adetona ascended the throne in 1960, becoming one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning and most influential traditional rulers. His 65-year reign was marked by visionary leadership, cultural preservation, and unwavering dedication to the development of Ijebuland and the Yoruba nation.
Under his guidance, Ijebuland flourished as a beacon of progress, with significant strides in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic growth. He was instrumental in elevating the Ojude Oba festival to international prominence, showcasing the rich heritage of the Ijebu people.
Born on May 10, 1934, in Imupa, Ijebu Ode, Oba Adetona hailed from the Anikinaiya Ruling House. Before his enthronement, he studied Accountancy in the United Kingdom, a rare feat among traditional rulers of his era.
His passing comes just hours after the death of his longtime friend and former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, marking a day of double mourning for the nation.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State described Oba Adetona as “a beacon of unity, cultural preservation, and progressive development,” and President Bola Tinubu hailed him as “a towering natural ruler” whose wisdom and integrity shaped national discourse.
