The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially commenced the long-awaited payment of arrears to corps members, fulfilling the Federal Government’s commitment to adjusting allowances in line with the new minimum wage policy.

Brigadier General Olakunle Akinlayo Nafiu, the Director-General of NYSC, confirmed that the payment process has begun, ensuring that both serving and recently discharged corps members receive the outstanding balance of their revised ₦77,000 monthly allowance. The arrears cover the difference between the previous ₦33,000 stipend and the newly implemented amount, dating back to July 2024.

The delay in disbursement was attributed to budgetary constraints, but the government has now secured the necessary funds to clear the backlog. Payments are being processed in batches, with assurances that all eligible corps members will receive their arrears promptly.

Corps members have expressed mixed reactions, with many relieved to finally receive their outstanding payments, while others remain frustrated over the prolonged wait. The NYSC leadership has reiterated its commitment to ensuring timely implementation of future policies affecting corps members
